Christmas Bird Count Training - Berkeley

11/22/2025 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM PT

Description

Would you like to participate in a Christmas Bird Count for the first time but don't know what to expect?

Need practice with identifying the most common species? Or need help counting large flocks of birds?

Want to learn more about the history of the Christmas Bird Count and how this data is used by scientists and conservationists?

This two hour sessions will go over the basics of what a Christmas Bird Count is all about, what to expect leading up to and on the day of the count, and then we'll go out together and practice identifying, counting, and covering ground. This session is designed for beginner or intermediate birders who have never participated in a Christmas Bird Count before.

We will spend about 1 hour seated or standing going over the basic information, and then we'll split up and head out into the park to count birds together and get some practice. We'll walk about 1-2 miles, slowly, on mostly flat well graded compact dirt trails.

Time: 9am-11am

Location: Cesar Chavez Park, Berkeley. We'll meet at the picnic area in the treed area on the south west side of the park, near the end of Spinnaker Way HERE

Organizer: Whitney Grover, contact wgrover@goldengatebirds.org for questions or additional information.

What to bring: Bring binoculars, water, sunscreen, hat. Bring a camp chair or folding chair if you need for sitting.

What you learn at this training can be applied to any CBC around the country, but we hope you will sign up for the San Francisco, Oakland, or Richmond counts this winter.
