It’s about 1.5-2 hours’ drive from Oakland and Berkeley to these Central Valley sites. Limited wheelchair accessible transportation will be provided from the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley. PLEASE RSVP for transportation ASAP. Space is limited.

Cosumnes River Preserve has a great variety of wintering ducks (including Ring-necked Ducks and the teal trifecta).  The universally-accessible Wetlands Walk Trail is a paved trail of about 1-mile along the ponds and then 0.5 miles on a boardwalk. (These are one-way distances.)

We’ll meet at Cosumnes near the information sign by the pit toilets at 11:30 am and then head for the Visitor Center’s covered porch for lunch and conversation before heading for the trail and ponds.

The Nature Conservancy manages the farmlands on Staten Island for the wintering Sandhill Cranes.  Tundra Swans on the flooded fields are likely, along with a variety of shorebirds, waterbirds and raptors.

Bring lunch, snacks, water, layers for cold, cloudy and rainy weather, and sun protection in case the day is fair and warm.   Also bring something to sit on as we’ll be stopping often.

The trip will be cancelled if rain is forecast. Rain date is Feb 14.

Trip Size: Limit 12

Detailed directions will be provided to people who register.
