Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary, Alameda

08/30/2026 11:00 AM - 01:00 PM PT

Description

Date: Sunday August 30, 11:00 am to 1:00pm

Leader: Maureen Lahiff, MLahiff@aol.com, 510.484.6529

Description: Shorebirds are arriving on San Francisco Bay from their nesting grounds in the Arctic and in the Great Basin and Great Plains. Some of them are using the Bay for a refueling stop before heading south, while others will stay here through next spring.  Many species are still molting.

We’ll meet at the viewing platform at Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary, which is at the southeast end of Shoreline Drive in Alameda.

We’ll walk a short distance south along the edge of the sanctuary and continue a short distance into the marsh on city property. Not much more than half a mile total.

There are benches on the viewing platform.  Bring water and sun protection, as there is no shade.  Restrooms and water available at the intersection of Shoreline Drive and Park Street (about 0.2 miles walk from the Elsie Roemer viewing platform).

If you’d like to borrow a pair of GGBA’s loaner binoculars, please let Maureen know by Wednesday, August 26.

Spotting scopes welcome and appreciated.

AC Transit bus line 21 from the Fruitvale BART comes the closest, at Otis and Broadway. It’s about a ¼ mile walk.

For those who arrive by car, parking on Broadway and streets off Broadway is the best bet.
