Accessible Birding at Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary, Alameda
Description
This trip is wheelchair accessible and specifically for people with disabilities and other health or mobility issues. To register for this trip, please contact Judith Smith at: judithsmith313@gmail.com
Date: Wednesday September 9 – 1 to 2:30 pm
Description: Join us at Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary on an accessible mid-day outing to see shorebirds arriving to spend the non-breeding season on the Bay or to refuel on their way to Central and South America. Some of them will still be molting out of their summer plumage. (This is a chance to see Black-bellied Plovers with black bellies.)
Our bird viewing area is between Broadway and the Elsie Roemer platform. There will be very little traveling on a level, paved wheelchair accessible path, though we will most likely also move onto a mowed lawn to get a better view. (Because it is impossible for those who are birding from a wheelchair to see over the railing at the Elsie Roemer viewing platform, we won’t be using it.)
Please bring water or other liquids. There are no benches and very little shade, so please bring something to sit on if you need it, sun protective clothing and sunscreen, or an umbrella to create shade., It is likely to be breezy. Weather may vary from cool and cloudy to sunny and very warm.
The nearest restroom (and water fountain) is about .25 miles away, at the intersection of Park St and Broadway. This restroom is accessible.
If you’d like to borrow a pair of GGBA’s loaner binoculars, please let Maureen know by Tuesday, September 8.
