Elevation Sensation: Birding the Vaca Mountains #1

05/04/2024 08:00 AM - 01:00 PM PT

Description

Trip Leader: Derek Heins (dheins@goldengatebirds.org)
Location:

Date: Saturday, May 4
Description: Enjoy the stunning views while birding a mountain ridge that's recovering from the 2020 Hennessey Fire. This outing offers excellent opportunities to hear and see a nice mix of resident and migrant species at a time when passthrough migrants and local breeders will be at peak activity.  This is prime habitat for Lazuli Buntings and Lark Sparrows but expect to see a nice mix of recent migrants setting up breeding territories. With a little luck, Mountain Quail, Bell’s Sparrow and Rock Wren are all possible to see or hear while birding the ridgeline. Maybe we can repeat the experience last year’s participants had when roughly 300 warblers passed along the ridgeline during a 30 minute period that left everyone breathless.

Trip Size: 11 participants max
Fee: $125

Accessibility: Distance: car birding
Trail Type: n/a
Facilities: no restroom available

Registration will open at 1 pm on Wednesday, February 28 and it will close at 11pm on Monday, April 29.
