The sagebrush basin and range country east of the Sierras offers a starkly beautiful landscape filled with fascinating birds and wildlife. Touring the region around Susanville and Honey Lake, you’ll watch male Greater Sage-Grouse dance at dawn for females’ attention, explore the human and natural history of the land, and consider the conservation threats that imperil it. Accessibility Distance: Roadside birding plus 3-mile round-trip hike to the sage grouse lek Trail Type: Access to the sage grouse lek involves a 3-mile hike in the dark up a very rutted jeep road with a few hundred feet of elevation gain, topping out at about 4,700 ft. in elevation. It involves some cross-country walking over a stony old lava field and a stream crossing. If conditions are muddy, the walk up the hill can be treacherous. Weather can range from balmy to frigid. If you have a heart or respiratory condition or mobility limitations, it would be prudent to forego the lek visit. Facilities: Minimal to non-existent
