Date: Thursday, May 2
Description
You may have come to John Hinkel Park to have a picnic or see a performance at the amphitheater, but this charming neighborhood park has other surprises up its sleeve: bubbling creeks and tiny waterfalls, live oak groves, tall redwoods, and birds! We’ll hope to see both resident and migrant species. Breeding season has begun, and in past years, there have been breeding hummingbirds, chickadees, juncos, and black phoebes. We will also admire the recently-completed park improvements, and talk about a surprising hummingbird food source.
Birders of all skill levels are welcome. John Hinkel Park has varying elevations and the paths are steep in some places. Stairs with handrails are available for some of the steep sections. The paths are a combination of dirt and pavement. Portable restrooms are available at the start of our walk.
Trip Size: 25 participants max
Directions: We’ll meet at the picnic tables across from the new playground. There are a few parking spaces at the playground, then street parking along Somerset Place, Southampton Ave., and San Diego Ave. above the park.
