Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (Oakland)
Description
Leader: Maureen Lahiff, MLahiff@aol.com, (510) 484-6529
Date: Saturday, March 22 – 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Description: It’s time to say farewell to shorebirds (and ducks). Eared and Horned Grebes have the plumage for which they are named, Dunlin have black belly patches, American Avocets have cinnamon blush on their heads and necks. This location is rewarding to birders of all levels of experience. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, and hats. It can be cold and windy here, so a jacket that cuts the wind can allow you to concentrate on the birds. Spotting scopes welcome and appreciated.
If you need to use a pair of Golden Gate Bird Alliance binoculars, please let Maureen know by Monday, March 17.
We will be walking about 2 miles, sometimes on level, paved paths, and sometimes on fairly hard-packed but uneven sandy areas. There are alternate paths for participants who wish to go around the sandy areas. There are restrooms near the parking area and at the observation tower on the railroad mole.
For more information about the park, please visit the Port of Oakland website: https://www.portofoakland.com/port/seaport/middle-harbor/
Trip Size: 20 Participants Max
Directions: Meet near the mast of the USS Oakland.
This event will open at 1 pm on Tuesday, February 18, and close at 11 pm on Thursday, March 20.
