Description

Leader: Daniel Elting, delting1213@gmail.com

Date: Saturday, March 15 – 8:30 am - 10:30 am

Description: Join Daniel Elting for a leisurely walk through the historic Alvarado Camp section of the Wildcat Canyon Regional Park in the East Richmond Heights. Sparse but mature coast live oaks and California bay laurels provide great viewing conditions for several species of passerines (perching birds), woodpeckers, and raptors. Near guaranteed sightings include resident Oak Titmouse, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, and Anna's Hummingbird with potential for wintering Golden-crowned Kinglet, or Red-breasted Sapsucker. An historic eucalyptus grove provides nesting habitat for Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks who if not seen, should make their presence known through territorial screeches. The trip will begin at the Alvarado Staging Area off Park Ave. which has abundant free public parking. Park benches and restrooms will be readily available and nearby for the duration of the trip route. Day-of-birding conditions will determine the exact route but expect an approximately 2-mile loop with gentle slopes on paved roads and well-maintained gravel trails. The trip will be capped at 12 attendees. See you there!

Trip Size: 12 Participants Max

Directions: The trip will begin at the Alvarado Staging Area off Park Ave.

This event will open at 1 pm on Tuesday, February 25, and close at 11 pm on Thursday, March 13.
