04/13/2025 08:00 AM - 11:30 AM PT

Description

Leader: Maureen Lahiff, MLahiff@aol.com, (510) 484-652

Date: Sunday April 13 – 8:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Description: There are two trips at Reinhardt Redwood this month. To give as many people as possible a
chance to enjoy listening to birds, please do not sign up for both of them.

This park features a variety of habitats: second and third growth Redwoods, mixed conifer and
deciduous woods, riparian corridor along Redwood Creek, meadows, chaparral and scrub.
We have a good chance to see resident California Quail, and hear if not see resident Wrentits.
Acorn Woodpeckers and corvids will be noisy and active. Black-headed Grosbeaks and Wilson’s
and Orange-crowned Warblers will be back, along with Pacific Wrens and Western Flycatchers
(ours were called Pacific-slope Flycatchers from 1989 to 2023); all of these birds are heard more
than seen. We’ll talk about distinctive bird sounds as we hear them. In the past few years, a pair
of Cooper’s Hawks have nested close to the Stream Trail where it crosses the creek as we move
from the Orchard Area to Fern Dell.

We’ll be walking about 1.5 miles on mostly level trails, which are hard-packed or paved.
Depending on the rains, there may be some puddles and muddy spots. This hike will likely be a
loop, but people who want to leave early can make it an out-and-back trek. There are a few
picnic tables along the way for rest stops.

It can be cool and damp under the redwoods, but warm in the sun, so please be prepared for a
range of temperatures.

Please bring drinking water; the fountains will probably still be off. There are restrooms with flush toilets at several points. The ones across from the Wayside
parking area up a few stairs; the restrooms at Canyon Meadow and Orchard do not require any
stairways.

No cell phone service or internet access in Redwood Canyon, so plan your drive beforehand.

Trip Size: 20 Participants Max

Directions: The park entrance is the Redwood Gate, on Redwood Road about 2 miles east of Skyline
Boulevard.

Once you are in the park, drive to the Wayside Area parking (first large lot on the left; past the
Fishway Lot).
