Hilltop Lake Park (Richmond)

05/14/2025 09:00 AM - 11:30 AM PT

Description

Trip Leader: Cathy Bleier, (510) 414-5719 cell, CBLEIER@GOLDENGATEBIRDS.org

Join me for an easy, flat stroll (a little over a mile) around Hilltop Lake in Richmond, a freshwater pond surrounded by willows, cattails, native vegetation and ornamental trees and shrubs. Year round residents may include woodpeckers, wrens, occasional waders & shorebirds, hummingbirds and raptors.  Winter brings in the ducks, kinglets, Audubon and Myrtle’s Yellow-rumped Warblers and kingfisher, while spring/summer sees migrants, nesting residents, hopefully Hooded Orioles, swallows, nuthatches and more.  Check out eBird bar chart for this location at https://ebird.org/barchart?r=l1405454&yr=all&m=

The trail is paved and there are cement block benches in 2 places. There is NO bathroom at this park; you can try the Chevron station at Richmond Parkway and Blume (just off freeway) or the Starbucks on Richmond Parkway and Atlas Rd.   Please bring binoculars.   Each person must sign in separately. No drop-ins, please.

This trip is free but advance registration is required.

Directions: The lake is at the end of the Richmond Parkway YMCA’s parking lot at 4300 Lakeside Dr., Richmond. If you’re coming from Highway 80, go west on Richmond Parkway exit; if coming from San Pablo Avenue, go east on Richmond Parkway. Turn onto Lakeside Drive and make immediate left into YMCA parking lot. Wind down left into lower lot and back up into one-way upper lot, where we’ll  meet.
