Bird Curious @ Oak Woodlands, Golden Gate Park (San Francisco)
Description

Contact: birdcurious@goldengatebirds.org
Date: Saturday, May 10 – 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Description: The Oak Woodlands in Golden Gate Park stand as one of San Francisco's few remaining natural areas that have survived since before the founding of the city. On this walk, native plants and diverse bird species will share the spotlight as we explore this historical habitat. We will search for hawks, jays, sparrows, woodpeckers and warblers while wandering through the woodland. With luck, we may even spot nests from the bird species that breed in this natural area.
Starting at 9:30 AM there is a completely optional habitat restoration work party in this area hosted by Friends of the Oak Woodlands and the SF Rec and Parks Natural Resource Division. For anyone who wants to stay for this, we will be removing invasive plants and tending to natives that were planted earlier this year. Gloves and tools provided.
This outing is part of the Bird Curious series. Bird Curious is for new birders and those that enjoy helping and sharing knowledge with new birders. We aim to highlight the contemplative aspects of birding by listening and being present. Our purpose is to create community around birds and deepen our relationship with the natural world through shared education and discovery.
A list of birds we could potentially see on our walk is here.
We expect the outing to be about 90 minutes, on mostly unpaved trails, including some moderate slopes. There are restrooms near where we will end, just beside the Conservatory of Flowers. (google map)
