Bird Curious @ Mitchell Canyon, Mt Diablo
Description
Date: Sunday May 4, 8-11 a.m.
Facilitators: Krish Maypole (krish.maypole@gmail.com), Margot Bezrutczyk (margot.bezrutczyk@gmail.com)
We’re excited to host a walk in this exceptional habitat for migrating songbirds. The Mitchell Canyon trail winds along a riparian corridor at the base of Mount Diablo, flanked by chaparral and pine forest that host many species of passerines during their migration.
It’s a ~1h drive from San Francisco, but a worthwhile trip each spring. We’ll provide carpool options for anyone interested. Important: if you do decide to drive yourself, there is a $6 parking fee and no attendant/change available, so bring exact cash.
This walk is part of the Bird Curious series—Bird Curious is for new birders. We aim to highlight the contemplative aspects of birding by listening and being present. Our purpose is to create community around birds and deepen our relationship with the natural world through shared education and discovery. Bird Curious walks will always be free! But this one has a parking fee!
No binoculars? No problem! We bring a few extra pairs.
We expect the walk to take 2-2.5 hours, and is about 1h from San Francisco. The trail has approximately 200 ft elevation gain and no steps. There are a few benches scattered throughout the park. There are restrooms in the parking lot.
Directions: We’ll message you with carpool options if you sign up! Here is the meeting spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/My8jgyeJNAStXEbi6
Cost: a $6 cash parking fee for this park, bring exact change.
This event will open at 1pm on Tuesday, April 15, and close at 11pm on Thursday, May 1.
