Bird City – Beginning Birding in San Francisco

06/09/2025 06:00 PM - 07/14/2025 08:00 PM PT

Description

Dates: June 9, 6:00 pm to July 14, 8:00 pm

Instructors: Whitney Grover (wgrover@goldengatebirds.org) and Keith Maley (keith.maley@gmail.com)

Birds are living their fascinating lives all around us even in this 2nd most densely populated city in the U.S.  Join us to learn about bird identification, behavior, migration, habitat, song, and more . Increase your appreciation for nature here in San Francisco while learning about its unique historical ecology.  This course is for you if you’ve always wondered about the birds around you, but have not been sure how to take the first steps to learn more.

Recordings of the lecture presentations will be available to class participants for a limited period of time.

Field Trips will all be in San Francisco, exact locations TBD but will include: Blue Heron Lake in Golden Gate Park, Land's End, Chain of Lakes in Golden Gate Park, Inspiration Point and El Polin Spring in the Presidio.  All field trip locations will have at least one restroom, but it may not be at the start of the trip.  Field trip walking distance will be no more than 2 miles, at a very slow pace.  Benches will be around but not guaranteed. There are some stairs in a couple of the trip locations (which may not have hand railings), but the terrain is mostly flat on well-graded trails. We will share details about the specific locations before each trip and can modify the route to accommodate mobility issues if needed.
