06/03/2025 08:30 AM - 11:00 AM PT

Description

Leaders: Angie Geiger, ageiger@goldengatebirds.org and Pat Greene, cell (415) 481-5469, pjgreene@sonic.net

Date:
Tuesday, June 3 – 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Description: The UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Preserve is a 61-acre remnant of more than 2000 acres of eucalyptus trees planted by Adolf Sutro in the late 1800s. UCSF has instituted a long-term management plan for the OSP with the initial phase focused on removing dead and dying trees to improve fire safety. Some tree replacement planting is evident.

We’ll walk about two miles on hilly trails that are mostly well graded, with some steep sections, rocky spots and exposed roots
https://www.sutrostewards.org/trail-map. The walk can be challenging in places. We’ll listen and look for birds. By early June most
migrant activity will be behind us, but we will see and/or hear year-round and summer residents such as Song Sparrows, Wilson’s
Warblers and Pacific Wrens among others. The birds will be vocally defending their territories. We will also be looking for juveniles.
Rain, heavy fog, or strong wind cancels. Pat Greene, pjgreene@sonic.net will send updates. There is a restroom at Aldea.

Trip size:  Registration is required and is limited to 10 participants.

Directions: Meet at the Aldea Community Center, 155 Johnstone Dr, at 8:30 AM.  If driving - Park on Clarendon or Delbrook as close to the Johnstone intersection as possible, then hike a short, steep uphill distance on Johnstone Drive to the UCSF Aldea Center on your left (across from the intersection of Medical Center Way on the right). Allow ~10 min to park and walk to the meeting place. (Note: Do not try to drive on Medical Center Way to get to this site.) Public Transportation. UCSF can be reached by public transit: N Judah light rail, and 43 and 6 buses, however, it requires hiking 0.8 miles uphill. Start at the intersection of Parnassus Avenue and Medical Center Way. Walk uphill along Medical Center Way to the
Aldea Center. Give yourself about 30 minutes to get there.

This event will open at 1 pm on Tuesday, May 20 and close at 11 pm on Monday, June 2.
