Special Event: Biodiversity Day in the East Bay

Celebrate California Biodiversity Day 2025 with a multi-park, long-day, adventure in the East Bay. 

8am - 10am: We’ll meet in Briones in the Bear Creek Staging area parking lot, then we’ll head south on Briones rd. to the Ivan Dickson trail, to the Seaborg trail, then head back on the Bear Creek trail. We’ll move through some open grassland, riparian, Oak woodland and Mixed evergreen forest. Cool things we might see: Golden Eagle, Acorn Woodpecker, White-breasted nuthatch, Tiger Swallowtail, Darkling beetle, velvet ant, Coyote. This will be a moderate hike (@2miles) with some short inclines and declines.

11am - 1pm: At Reinhardt Redwoods we’ll enter through the Redwood Park Gate off Redwood rd. we’ll meet in the Canyon Meadow Staging Area and head out the Stream trail to the Bridle trail, then stay on the Stream trail on our return. We’ll mainly be moving through a Redwood riparian zone bordering mixed evergreen forest. Cool things we might see: Brown Creeper, Western Flycatcher, California Quail, Coopers Hawk, giant millipede, Pine Sawyer beetle, California Newt, Western Gray squirrel. This is an easy hike  (@2 miles), fairly flat.

2pm - 4pm: At Coyote Hills, we’ll meet in front of the Visitor Center and head north on the Bay View trail to the Lizard Rock trail, take the D.U.S.T trail to the connector to the Muskrat trail, then we’ll return on the Bay View trail. This is all open grassland around a complex freshwater marsh.
Cool things we might see: Northern Harrier, Common Gallinule, Marsh Wren, White Pelican, Giant Crane fly, Dragonfly, Red fox. Easy hike,(@1.25 miles) very little elevation gain.

We’ll be averaging about 1mile/hr. We’ll be birding out, planting out and bugging out on everything we see. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, layers, daypack, water, sunscreen and anything else you want to carry on a day of counting every living thing we encounter, i.e. magnifiers, bug nets, field guides (paper and digital) binoculars, tape measures, cameras, etc…. And don’t forget snacks and lunch!
