Description

Leader: Rory Reid, rory@roryreidlaw.com, 702-499-4494; David Edelson, davidedelson6@gmail.com

Date and Time: Saturday September 27 – 8 to 11 a.m.

Description: Birders of all experience levels will find something to enjoy here. This EBMUD watershed land features a great variety of habitats – chaparral and scrub, grassland, pine-oak woodland, marsh, a stream and open water on the Upper San Leandro Reservoir. The avian life is just as diverse with an interesting assortment of residents and migrants, including raptors, six species of woodpeckers (although it may be a bit early for the Red-breasted Sapsucker), warblers, various nuthatch species, waterbirds along the reservoir, and the California Thrasher. Wood Ducks do nest in the boxes provided, but since they are very shy, we may not see them.

After the first bit of narrow trail (not suitable for wheelchairs), walking is mainly flat on unpaved trails, with some gentle elevation changes. Total walking distance about 1.5 miles. There is very little shade. There is a portable toilet at the staging area, but no drinking water.

Trip Size: 15 participants max.

Directions: Valle Vista EBMUD Watershed is located on Canyon Rd in Moraga, between Pinehurst Rd and Camino Pablo.
