Date: Saturday September 27 –  8:30 am to around 3:00 pm

Description: Meet at the Bear Valley Visitor Center at 8:30 am. The main goal is to spend time at the Outer Point to check for migrants and vagrants. First, we’ll visit the areas near the Lighthouse and Chimney Rock (Fish Docks). We’ll make an optional third stop at Drake’s Beach on our way back. To see why the Outer Point can be such a spectacular location for vagrants during fall migration, take a look at a map. Jules Evens calls Point Reyes a coyote head in profile; the Outer Point is the snout of the coyote. However, the actual trip locations will be determined by weather. In case of excessive fog and wind on the Outer Point, we may stay inland on the Earthquake trail at the Bear Valley Visitor Center and around Five Brooks and other more inland spots. Weather can range from cool, foggy and windy with temperatures as low as 40 degrees F to warm and sunny. There is not much shade, so sun protection is a must. Please bring snacks and lunch. Water is available at Bear Valley, the Lighthouse, and Drake’s Beach. Restrooms or pit toilets all locations. Except for Bear Valley, no cell phone service. While the trails are wide and paved, there are some moderately gradual elevation changes at both the Lighthouse and Chimney Rock. Estimated walking distances: 1 mile round trip at the Lighthouse,1 mile round trip at most at Fish Docks, half mile round trip at Drake’s Beach. Since parking is limited at the Outer Point areas, we will do our best to consolidate cars when we meet at Bear Valley, while respecting people’s COVID concerns.

More detailed information will be sent to those who sign up.

One of the advantages of meeting at the Bear Valley Visitor Center is that we’ll have cell phone
signal (and there are flush toilets).
