Bird Curious at Glen Canyon Park (San Francisco)
Description
Leader: Heather Shane and Lydia Bruno, Email birdcurious@goldengatebirds.org with any questions. Please include the location and date of the trip in the email subject line.
Date: Saturday, January 17 - 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Description: Join us for an exploration of the birding hotspot, Glen Canyon Park. We’ll look for a variety of woodpeckers, sparrows and hawks, among many other birds in this lively park.
This outing is part of the Bird Curious series – Bird Curious is for new birders and those that enjoy helping and sharing knowledge with new birders. We aim to highlight the contemplative aspects of birding by listening and being present. Our purpose is to create a community around birds and deepen our relationship with the natural world through shared education and discovery.
Bird Curious walks will always be free, but please register so we know you’re coming. If you are unable to attend, please do promptly cancel so that your spot opens up for others hoping to join.
For a list of birds we could potentially see on our walk, check out the eBird records for last January at Glen Canyon Park here (https://ebird.org/hotspot/L590796/bird-list?yr=cur&m=1).
No binoculars? No problem! Fill out this form (https://goldengatebirdalliance.org/58026-2/) to check out a pair from Golden Gate Bird Alliance’s lending library. We will also have a few loaner pairs on hand, available on a first come, first served basis - please email us in advance to let us know if you need to borrow a pair. If you have an extra pair of binoculars and you’re willing to bring them along to share, please do!
We expect the walk to take approximately two hours, with 100 - 200 ft elevation gain - the path mostly has stairs along the hilly sections (note: there are no railings), though a few segments involve craggy rocks without stairs. There are places to sit in the park (near the community center and playground), but there are no benches along the birding route. There are restrooms at the community center next to our meeting spot.
Limit: 20
We'll meet at the picnic benches next to the children's playground, near the rec center bathrooms. The closest park entrance is at Elk and Chenery Street. There is no parking lot for Glen Canyon Park, so if you drive you will need to park in the neighborhood. The 44 bus stops at Elk and Bosworth (just up the hill from the park entrance), and the Glen Park BART station and the 23, 35, 36 and 52 Munis have stops within a ~10-minute walk from the park.
