Birds in the Anthropocene
Description
Registration opens on Wednesday, February 4 at 1pm and closes at 11 pm on Tuesday, April 7.
Instructors: Sierra Ru-yi Glassman (sierraru@g.ucla.edu), Emily Yuki Banno (eybanno@berkeley.edu), Santiago Enrique Lupi (santi.e.lupi@berkeley.edu) for field trips
Description: Birds have not only been objects of fascination throughout human history; they have been worshiped as gods, valued as companions, and consumed as food. They have inspired our cultures in a multitude of ways, and we, in turn, have deeply impacted avian biology. In this class, we will learn about the shared history of birds and humans from perspectives in biology to anthropology and go on field trips corresponding to our lecture topics.
Recordings of the lecture presentations will be available to class participants for a limited amount of time.
Field trips:
Driving for these locations will be more challenging than public transit due to traffic and high parking demand.
April 18, UC Berkeley Campus
This location is easily accessible from the BART stop a five minute walk away. The total walking distance will be under 2 miles. The path will have slight inclines and declines, but it is paved. There are nearby bathrooms on location open from 8-11am and there are also many nearby shops with bathrooms.
May 2, Lake Merritt, Oakland
This location is most easily accessible from the nearby BART stop which is a 12 minute walk away. The BART station has restrooms. The path is all flat and paved, and we will be walking less than 2.5 miles.
May 9, Telegraph Hill, San Francisco
We are meeting less than 5 minutes’ walk from the closest BART station. The total walking distance for this trip is less than 2.5 miles, but it does include steep uphill and stairs. The walk to the hill is relatively flat, but once we get to it there will be a lot of steep stairs going up and down. There is a tower at the top of the hill that has restrooms. Restrooms are also available near the start and end of our walk.
