We need your help to create a meadow section of Pier 94 Uplands! Join us on this special event to cover the recently burned area with cardboard and then mulch to help suppress the weeds, preparing the area for meadow plantings.

Thanks to the California Academy of Science's Reimagining San Francisco Rapid Response fund for covering materials costs for this project.

In the summer of 2025, an accidental fire was set in the south west corner of the upland area of the Pier 94 wetland. The fire burned a large area of scrub habitat used by white-crowned sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, and other upland species. GGBA is gearing up to use this opportunity of the now cleared area to suppress future weed growth through sheet mulching. While the burn area did have some Toyon and Coyote Brush, it was dominated by invasive grasses, thistles, and fennel.

The fire clearing is now an opportunity to suppress some of the weedy invasives and bushy natives, the first step for long-term suppression plan to make way for more diversity of native plant meadow species. In the following year GGBA will seed native grasses, flowers, and other forbs appropriate for this upland marsh habitat.

Bring your water bottle. Wear closed-toe shoes, and weather appropriate clothing including dress in layers with long pants and long sleeved shirt. Bring your own gardening gloves and 5 Gal plastic bucket w/handle if you have these items and would like to, but gloves and tools will also be provided... and of course you will see our bird friends while you work! Private Porta Potty on site.

Detailed meeting spot and directions will be emailed to registered participants.
