Crissy Field Lagoon, Quartermaster Reach, and surrounding areas (San Francisco)

Date: Tuesday, April 21,  10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Description: Meet at the Presidio's East Beach parking lot on Tuesday, April 21, at 10:00 am; more specifically,  in the grassy area just north of the bathrooms / changing rooms.    The trip will last around 2 ½ hours.  This will be a slow walk of about 1½ to 2 miles on level trails, some paved, some unpaved; we will probably also walk onto the beach to see what birds are on the Bay.  Mostly, we will be looking for birds on the water or the shore.  We should see some resident and over-wintering birds.  I am also hoping to see some migrating shorebirds in breeding plumage, including Western Sandpipers and Semi-palmated Plovers.    There is a bathroom at the start of the trip, we will also pass another bathroom during the first portion of the trip.  There are some benches along the way, but even if empty, they may not hold more than a few people.  

The trip is open to all levels of birders.  Please bring binoculars; IF YOU HAVE A BIRDING TELESCOPE PLEASE BRING THAT AS WELL. Rain cancels.

Directions: Entering the Presidio from the East: take Marina Blvd., and continue straight ahead.  (Do NOT bear left onto Girard Blvd, heading towards 101.) Marina Blvd. becomes Mason St when you enter the Presidio.  Then take the first right off of Mason St. after entering the Presidio, continue straight until you reach the parking lot, then turn left (west) until you get near the changing rooms.

Entering the Presidio from any other direction:  You will need to get onto Mason Street (sometimes called Old Mason St.) heading east.  Old Mason St. runs parallel to the freeway, just north of the freeway from McDowell St. to the east end of the Presidio.  (Putting Sports Basement Presidio into your GPS should get you onto Mason St.) Continue East past the Sports Basement, and then take the last left before leaving the Presidio.  Continue straight ahead until you reach the parking lot, then turn left until you get near the changing rooms.   
    
BY MUNI:  Some, but not all, 30 Stockton buses go into the Presidio.  Get off in the Presidio at the corner of Mason & Halleck Streets.  Take the trail that heads north and east, that begins just a bit west of the bus stop.  Cross the footbridge and continue more or less straight ahead through the picnic area.  Continue a short distance east through the parking area and you should arrive at the changing rooms.
