Queer Birding at Arrowhead Marsh
Description
Trip Leaders: Eréndira Blanco, Mahal A., Lilly Tran
Date: Sunday, June 14 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Description:
Join us for a beginner-friendly stroll through Arrowhead Marsh in East Oakland, as we celebrate Pride month by building community through birding!
We can expect to see a wide array of both shorebirds and terrestrial birds, as our path straddles both water and land. Frequently seen here are birds like coots, egrets, terns, dark-eyed juncos, black phoebes, and the ever-present sparrows!
We will meet at the “Oak Port Field” parking lot, also searchable as “Arrowhead Marsh Staging Area.” This parking lot is directly adjacent to restrooms, and is close to multiple picnic tables/benches. The path we’ll take will be paved and mostly flat, with subtle and unfrequent inclines. There is not much shade cover, so we suggest bringing a hat, sunglasses, and using other sun protection. We are right by the bay, so it can get windy! Dress in layers and comfortable footwear. Don’t forget to bring your own water bottle and snacks.
*Please note, in the spirit of collective care and resistance, we are requiring participants wear a face mask during this field trip*. We ask that folks mask except when eating, drinking, or taking mask breaks- this helps us keep the event as accessible and inclusive as possible!
Trip size: Limit 20 participants
Car Directions: If you are coming in from Alameda via Highway 61/Doolittle Dr., you will take a turn onto Swan Way and then turn into the park- go past the first parking lot (“MLK Jr. Grove”) and follow the road down to the very last parking lot, which is our meeting spot, Oak Port Field. If you are coming in from Hegenberger Rd, you will turn into Pardee Dr before turning left onto Swan Way.
Carpooling: The facilitators will help coordinate carpooling for anyone interested. We can pick up anyone taking public transportation from Coliseum BART station at 9:45 am; unfortunately, the nearest bus stop is a 25-minute walk away! (AC line 73; nearest stop Hegenberger Rd & Edgewater Dr.)
