San Francisco Habitats, Their Birds and Their Plants: Coastal Scrub

Description: Throughout the fall, we’ll take a deep dive into the coastal scrub habitat via three field trips, spaced approximately one month apart in order to experience the habitat as the season progresses.
 
The class will kick off with an introductory Zoom and the rest of the instruction will take place in the field. To supplement the field trips, a list of suggested readings and videos relevant to each location will be provided.
 
The field trips will be nontraditional - there won’t be a class eBird list. Instead, the focus will be on understanding the relationships between birds and their habitats. We’ll be engaging with plants via iNaturalist and hands-on activities, experimenting with different ways to relate to birds, and exploring ways for us to contribute to nurturing plants that support birds.
 
This class is for those who are curious about the natural world and interested in creating a community of practice centered around how habitat supports birds. The instructors plan to offer future classes in the same format for other San Francisco habitats.
 
All field trips will be in San Francisco and will be accessible via public transit. Specific field trip location information will be provided by email before each field trip.
 
Field trip travel will be on paved or hard-packed surfaces, generally less than 2 miles total. When there may be inclines, we will take them slowly. Participants may find hiking poles useful on some of the trails. There will be places to sit as we observe and share conversation. Restrooms will be available at the trailhead or nearby.  If you have more questions about the field trip terrain, please contact the instructors.
 
Weather on the field trips is likely to be variable, from cool, foggy and windy to hot and sunny. There may be little shade, so it's important to be prepared for sun exposure, even though it'll be fall.
