Rebellious Perspectives on Birding

Description: This class is ideal for those interested in unraveling the dominant narratives and conventions of birding and the broader conservation movement. We will do so by building community with one another, practicing our birding skills, and engaging with writing and other media from birders with unique lenses on ecology, culture, and activism. Curious birders of all experience levels (including beginners) are welcome.
The class consists of six three-hour field excursions on Sundays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. We will visit each site twice.
September 20, Glen Canyon Park, San Francisco, 1-mile loop, flat and mostly paved paths
September 27, Lake Merritt Botanical Gardens, Oakland, .75 mile mostly flat with gentle, paved slope
October 4, Fort Mason Community Garden, San Francisco, 1 mile loop, paved slope, with options to avoid stairs; one-week break
October 18, Glen Canyon Park
October 25, Lake Merritt Botanical Gardens
November 1, Fort Mason Community Garden
Restrooms are available at each site.
